Evangelistria Monastery

Today we went to Evangelistria monastery, which is where the very first Greek flag was created. Evangelistria is the only monastery in Skiathos that is still inhabited by monks. This was our favorite monastery for the following reasons…

1). The Environment

The presence of monks, the enclosed architecture, the surrounding mountains, and total seclusion from the rest of the island created a relaxing atmosphere.

2). The Museum
The museum at Evangelistria contains many manuscripts, artifacts, and artworks that teach about the monastery’s crucial role in the Greek struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire.
The first Greek flag was made on this loom.
3). The Gift Shop
The monks at Evangelistria make their own wine, olive oil, tsipouro, and liqueur, which can be purchased among many other items in the gift shop.

Tip: Dress appropriately. We witnessed a woman in a bathing suit top get yelled at so if you would like to visit Evangelistria or any religious place for that matter, please cover up.
