Kounistra Monastery

Sorry everyone,

I’ve been having trouble connecting to wifi. Anyways, we finally went out to the clubs the other night with some crazy Greeks. We had a little issue with the door to our apartment so unfortunately we had to wake up the person living downstairs at 5:00 in the morning (for the second time). He was not very happy about it...

Stephanie and I figured what better way to repent than to visit one of the island’s monasteries. Five hours later at 10:00 am, we stumbled into Demetra’s car and took a scenic drive through the mountains to Kounistra monastery.

The Kounistra monastery is considered the protector of the island. It gets its name from the miraculous icon that was found swinging from a pine tree nearby. The icon was taken to Skiathos town but kept moving back to the tree near Kounistra. The church at Kounistra was then built to commemorate this miracle.

Today, the original icon is displayed in the main church of Skiathos town. There is an annual church service held every November in honor of this miracle. Here's a copy of the original icon from Kounistra...

The Kounistria icon.
